The North-East District (Malay: Daerah Timur Laut) encompasses the northeastern half of Penang Island, featuring the vibrant center of George Town, the capital city of Penang. With an area of 122.79 km2 and a population of 510,996 as of 2010, this district is a blend of rich history and modern conveniences.
Timur Laut is home to some of the oldest educational institutions in Malaysia. Notably, Penang Free School, founded in 1816, stands as the oldest English school in Southeast Asia. Other prominent English-medium schools, including St. Xavier's Institution, St. George's Girls School, and Methodist Boys' School, have played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia's influential figures across various fields.
Linked to the Malay Peninsula by the iconic Penang Bridge, Timur Laut offers excellent connectivity. The district boasts a well-developed road network, blending historical narrow streets in the city center with modern arterial roads connecting suburbs like Tanjung Tokong, Air Itam, and Jelutong. The Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway enhances accessibility, running along the eastern coastline to connect the city center with the Penang International Airport, Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, and the Penang Bridge.
Timur Laut provides a diverse range of amenities, including cultural and recreational spots, shopping centers, and dining options. Residents enjoy the perfect balance of historical charm and modern comforts.
