Merdeka 118 is more than just a skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Standing at 678.9 meters, it’s the second tallest building in the world and the tallest in Southeast Asia. Completed in 2023 and officially opened in January 2024, the tower represents Malaysia’s national pride, cultural identity, and ambition to be a global city.
Merdeka 118 reaches 678.9 meters (2,227 feet) with 118 floors, making it the second tallest building in the world, just behind Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. The tower dominates the Kuala Lumpur skyline, offering both locals and tourists a striking symbol of progress.
Construction began in 2014 under developer Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), a government-owned investment firm. The building topped out in 2021 and was officially completed in 2023. The grand opening took place on January 10, 2024, though some facilities like the observation deck and the Park Hyatt hotel are still being finalized as of mid-2025.
Merdeka 118 sits on Jalan Hang Jebat, near Stadium Merdeka, the historic site where Malaysia declared independence. Its location carries strong cultural significance and is directly linked to the Merdeka MRT Station, making it easily accessible. The development also connects through the Belfield Tunnel, providing direct routes to major highways.
The skyscraper dedicates 80 floors to office use, with 60 of them reserved for PNB and its subsidiaries. These modern offices offer world-class facilities, cementing the building’s role as a corporate hub.
A standout feature is the 17-story Park Hyatt hotel, Malaysia’s first 6-star luxury accommodation. With premium suites, fine dining, and wellness centers, it positions Kuala Lumpur as a luxury destination for global travelers.
The integrated 118 Mall brings high-end retail outlets, dining options, and lifestyle spaces into the tower precinct. Residential spaces add to the mixed-use nature of the development, making it a self-contained vertical city.
Merdeka 118 boasts two observation decks, one located inside the spire and another within the tower itself. These decks, the highest in Southeast Asia, provide breathtaking panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur and beyond.
With facilities for up to 8,500 cars, the development caters to high visitor volumes. Its integration with public transit makes it accessible while reducing dependency on private vehicles.
Designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects, the building’s shape resembles Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, raising his hand to declare independence. The diamond-patterned glass facade represents the country’s diversity and cultural richness.
The project relied on world-renowned structural engineers including Leslie E. Robertson Associates, Robert Bird Group, and Arup. Their expertise ensured that the tower could withstand wind forces, seismic activities, and remain efficient in design.
The cladding features over 18,000 glass panels covering 114,000 square meters. At night, 8.4 kilometers of LED light strips animate the structure, making it a luminous icon on the skyline.
Merdeka 118 targets triple platinum certification from LEED, GreenRE, and Green Building Index (GBI). Its energy-efficient systems, sustainable construction materials, and water-saving technologies highlight Malaysia’s push toward greener development.
The 7.7-hectare precinct includes four acres of parks and open spaces, offering a green balance to urban density. The project also sparked major infrastructure upgrades, improving connectivity and accessibility.
The restoration of Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara is part of the development. By combining modern architecture with heritage preservation, Merdeka 118 reinforces its symbolic link to Malaysia’s independence.
The development cost RM5 billion, fully funded by PNB. As a government-linked project, it aims to generate long-term economic returns and serve as a strong investment for future growth.
Beyond creating thousands of jobs, Merdeka 118 boosts local businesses, retail trade, and tourism. It also strengthens Kuala Lumpur’s appeal as an international business hub.
