Sungai Mati, nestled in Daerah Tangkak, Johor, Malaysia, holds a significant place in history. Notably, it is the birthplace of the 14th Chief Minister of Johor, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Othman.
The town's name originates from a unique river phenomenon, where two river bends merge, creating a stagnant pool in a third-level river. Despite this phenomenon, Sungai Mati remains connected to Sungai Muar, retaining its historical ties to the river.
Historically, Sungai Mati served as a bustling river port known as "Li Hong Kang," indicating a prosperous harbor, particularly among the Chinese community, who still refer to it by this name.
While relatively small and perceived as less developed compared to other towns in the region, Sungai Mati's strategic location - approximately 18km from Tangkak, 10km from Muar, and 16km from Bukit Gambir - adds to its significance. The town preserves its heritage through over 20 rows of old shops dating back to 1927, which were once the hub of community activity.
