Known as Bandar Maharani, Muar is the captivating historical capital of the Muar District in Johor, Malaysia. This town, rich in heritage, stands out as a top destination for travelers seeking authentic Malaysian experiences.
As a hub for food, coffee, and historical architecture, Muar invites visitors to explore its prewar buildings and savor local delicacies. Its status as one of Malaysia's most beloved tourist attractions is well-deserved, thanks to its unique blend of culture and cuisine.
Recently honored as the royal town of Johor by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Muar is not just a historical gem but also a vital urban area in Johor. Ranking fourth in size after Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat, and Kluang, it plays a significant role in the region's urban landscape.
Muar, extending beyond the town itself, encompasses the larger Muar region, including the Muar and Tangkak districts. The recent elevation of Tangkak from a sub-district enhances the area's administrative and cultural significance, with Muar district covering the southern area of Sungai Muar.
Despite the administrative division, the areas of Muar and Tangkak collectively retain a strong sense of community. Residents and visitors alike fondly regard these regions as an integral part of the Muar identity, fostering a sense of unity and belonging.
Proudly recognized as one of Southeast Asia's cleanest cities, Muar was awarded the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard Award in 2017. This accolade reflects the city's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.
The evolving landscape of Muar continues to captivate visitors. The new township, located in the Bakri area, offers a fresh perspective on this historic city, blending modern development with traditional charm.
