According to local oral history, Lubuk China earned its name from a group of Chinese individuals embarking on a journey using a large boat along the river. Local Malays made efforts to retrieve their bodies, finding them in an embrace in a deep pool in the river. Since then, the area became known as Lubuk Cina, commemorating this poignant event.
In 1988, Lubuk China faced flooding, and the main road was impassable for all but heavy vehicles. Today, the Rembau River, which flows through it, has been dredged, straightened, and flood control measures implemented, ensuring the safety of the town.
Despite its Melakan location, Lubuk China boasts a population conversant in the Negeri Sembilan dialect, reflecting its unique position at the border of Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.
