Development of LRT Lines in Johor: A Comprehensive Study

Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, the chairman of the state works, transportation, and infrastructure committee, disclosed that a comprehensive development study, conducted by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) and Johor Public Transport Corporation (PAJ), had paved the way for these proposed Johor LRT lines.

Johor LRT Project: Objective and Details

The primary objective is to complement the upcoming Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link), scheduled for completion by early 2027. The three identified LRT lines are named the Tebrau line, Skudai line, and Iskandar Puteri line, collectively spanning a length of 30km, reaching from Johor Baru to the Senai International Airport in Kulai. Each line is expected to be approximately 10km long.

Integration with Other Transportation Initiatives

During a press conference at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar, Mohamad Fazli emphasized that the introduction of the LRT system in Johor Bahru would seamlessly integrate with other transportation initiatives such as the Gemas-Johor Baru Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). However, he underscored the need for a thorough study to ensure that these proposals effectively address the unique traffic dynamics of Johor Bahru, especially given its proximity to Singapore.

Johor's High-Speed Rail Project Plans

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, while tabling the state budget for 2024, expressed the state's desire to revive the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project between Malaysia and Singapore. He highlighted the importance of expediting both the HSR and LRT projects to solidify Johor's position as a key investment destination in the region. The state government is hopeful that the Federal Government will consider and approve these initiatives to enhance the overall transportation infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in Johor. The next crucial meeting will determine the most viable options before seeking federal approval for the LRT project.
